Málþroski ungra barna eflist í samræmi við hversu góða málörvun þau fá. Fyrir leikskólabörn hér á landi sem nota ekki íslensku með fjölskyldu sinni (ísl2) er mikilvægt að nýta skóladaginn vel. Þar gefast hugsanlega einu tækifæri barnanna til þróa íslenskufærni sína. Í erlendum rannsóknum hafa komið fram jákvæð tengsl milli orðaforða og þess mörg fjölbreytileg orð leikskólakennarar samtölum börnin frjálsum leik. Áhrifin verða mest hjá börnum sama tungumál skólanum fá fátæklega heima. Þá rannsóknir sýnt gæði málörvunar leikskólakennara hefur forspárgildi um lesskilning þegar eru komin grunnskóla. leikskólastarfi sérstaklega gagnlegt beina opnum spurningum ná þannig gagnkvæmum samtölum. Meginmarkmið rannsóknarinnar voru bera saman orðræður starfsmanna fimm sex ára ísl2 jafnaldra móðurmál (ísl1), meðan leik þeirra stóð. Þátttakendur fjórir starfsmenn, en tveir leikskólakennaramenntun einn leikskólaliði, ásamt þremur 11 ísl1 börnum. Niðurstöður sýndu hvert barn fékk helmingi færri mínútu, segðir, jafnframt mun algengari börnin. Auk fengu engar opnar spurningar eða orðainnlagnir, aðeins mátti finna Mikilvægt leikskólastarfsfólk rýni samskipti sín börn, hvort þar felist framfara, taki reglulegum framförum íslensku.
